Marvo's Magical Miscellany
Marvo's Magical Miscellany is described on page 44.
Marvo knows all of the spells listed below as prerequisites for his items, and sells scrolls of them at the usual prices. He doesn't keep a stock of scrolls, but scribes them to order.
Goods for Sale
All-Weather Belts: A person wearing one of these belts is protected from the weather as if she were wearing the most appropriate clothing possible, regardless of what she is actually wearing. A bikini in a blizzard or layers of fur in a jungle, both leave the wearer comfortable. The belt also keeps rain and other precipitation off the character. Marvo keeps brown, black, and white versions in stock, and will make others to order. As magic items, they change size to fit the wearer, so that isn't an issue.
Most owners of these belts make sure that they do wear completely inappropriate clothing, so that people realise what an expensive belt they have on.
Caster Level: 1st; Prerequisites: Craft Wondrous Item, weather
Change Goblets: These goblets are available in all standard sizes, and Marvo will make them to order in different materials. The ones in stock are all silver or pewter; add 25gp for glass and 50gp for gold.
The visual appearance of any drink placed in the goblet is changed to a standard appearance, determined when the item is created. Marvo carries water and wine goblets, and will make others to order.
Caster Level: 1st; Prerequisites: Craft Wondrous Item, silent image; Market Price: 100gp; Weight: Negligible
Colourskin Potions: These potions have a simple effect. The imbiber's skin turns a particular colour for a period of two hours after drinking. If the imbiber does not want to be affected, a Fortitude save against a DC of 10 negates the effect. The potions are intended as party novelties, not as weapons. The potion itself is always the colour that it imparts to the skin. Some of Marvo's more expensive versions are striped or decorated with patterns. They colour the skin in those patterns.
Caster Level: 1st; Prerequisites: Brew Potion, change self; Market Price: Single colour: 50gp; Pattern: 75gp.
Dancing Figurines: These small enchanted statues are between six inches and a foot high, and weigh between one and four pounds. They appear to be carved from wood, and then painted, and the craftsmanship is excellent but not inspired. Several different figures are available, and Marvo is willing to create particular designs to order. His standard designs include humans, halflings, and gnomes, but most are elves and half-elves, and most of those are scantily clad females. If pressed on this, Marvo shrugs and says that he makes what sells.
When music is played within the 'hearing' of the figurines, they move and dance to it. The dances are competent and entertaining, but have no real creativity and become repetitive after a few minutes. The figurines never step beyond their bases, but can lift their feet from the base and even jump into the air.
Caster Level: 3rd; Prerequisites: Craft Wondrous Item, animate rope, cat's grace, creator must have at least five ranks in Perform; Market Price: 200gp; Weight: 1-4 lbs.
Goblets of Surpassing Flavour: These items change the flavour of the liquid placed within them to a standard flavour determined when the item is created. As for the Change Goblets, Marvo carries stock in silver and pewter, and will make them in other materials to order, at the same price differential. He carries several fine wine flavours in stock, and makes others to order. However, he will not make goblets which simulate Tarenian Ruby, because Marik Dessan pays him 500gp per year not to. Marvo likes the reliable income, which keeps him in comfort, and so will not violate the agreement unless the bribe is truly enormous.
Caster Level: 1st; Prerequisites: Craft Wondrous Item, figmentary flavour; Market Price: 100gp; Weight: Negligible
Shimmering Goblets: Shimmering goblets make the liquid within appear as a swirling, glittering, shining mixture of many different colours. Marvo only carries glass versions, as these items are much more effective when you can see the whole volume of the fluid. He will make them of alternative materials to special order, 25gp cheaper for silver and pewter, 25gp more expensive for gold.
Caster Level: 1st; Prerequisites: Craft Wondrous Item, dancing lights, color spray, silent image; Market Price: 150gp; Weight: Negligible.

This spell allows the caster to control the flavour of a meal, or to create a taste in the mouth of a target creature. In either case, those interacting with the spell may choose to forgo the saving throw, so that they may enjoy a pleasant taste.
If the target is a creature, the caster may create a foul taste, which makes the target nauseated for the duration of the spell.

Target: Creature touched
Duration: 1 hour
Saving Throw: Will negates (harmless)
Spell Resistance: Yes (harmless)
The target of this spell is protected from the weather as if she were wearing the most appropriate clothing for the climate. This does not grant her immunity from the effects of extreme heat or cold, but it does allow her to wear wildly inappropriate clothes without ill-effect, either to herself or the clothes. Thus, elaborate feathery things don't become soaked and bedraggled in a downpour, and light floaty scarves don't blow away in gales. She can wear heavy furs in high summer, and bikinis in the depths of winter.
The Warrior's Rest
The Warrior's Rest is an inn in New Mages. The signboard hanging outside shows a dwarven warrior sleeping in a large, luxurious bed, while wearing full chain mail armour. Otherwise, the building is fairly unremarkable, if clean and well-maintained. It has three storeys, with a large window on the ground floor through which the common room is visible.
The inside is much like the outside. Everything is clean and in good repair, the staff are polite and neatly dressed, and the food and drink, while simple, are well-prepared and promptly served. The Warrior's Rest charges normal prices for accommodation and food, but does everything well. The blankets handed out to those sleeping in the common room, while limited in number, are thoroughly cleaned so that they have no fleas. The upstairs dormitory actually has bunks, so that you don't need to sleep on the floor. The private rooms (half of the first floor and half of the second floor -- the dormitory occupies the rest of the first floor) are cleaned every day, and supplied with a few fresh flowers in a vase every morning.
Deren Scarnal, a dwarf, is the proprietor of the inn. He has lived in Marchion for many years, and refuses to talk about his past. In fact, he ran an inn in a dwarven city before he came to Marchion, as did his father before him. Deren left because he was tired of seeing only dwarves, and keeps quiet about his past because it is boring, and he enjoys the mystique that the mystery grants.
The staff of the inn are drawn from all the races of Marchion, and Deren is scrupulous about welcoming any guests who behave themselves. However, he is slightly more friendly towards dwarves, who are now a welcome reminder of his youth. Deren is a fifth level expert, while his staff are first or second level experts or commoners. Deren lives in the rear half of the second floor, while his staff live elsewhere in New Mages and on Mage Hill.
Deren is happy to have the player characters stay in his inn as long as they do not have a negative reputation in the city, and do not cause trouble in the inn. If they stay for some time, as they might, and then become famous, Deren capitalises on their patronage to advertise his services. As he maintains quality, this results in The Warrior's Rest becoming extremely popular with middling travellers and beginning adventurers, and Deren becomes quite wealthy and very well disposed towards the player characters.
