    This was precisely the kind of detailed answer I was seeking.  You've
confirmed some of my own thoughts and given me some new ideas.  My thanks
for taking the time to reply.

    One question I have is in the matter of the Reeve.  Every definition
I've seen that address the election of the Reeve indicates that the person
is essentially elected by the villeins themselves from among their own
number (usually being one of the larger landholders).  Knowing the
variability of local custom, I'm sure there were times and places when the
local Lord had a say or was responsible for choosing the Reeve.  Do you know
of any references to this (web or book)?
