Eivind,
here's some - quick - answers to your questions.
//Sure they didn't have an equivalent of the village reeve
even though they had no common law?//
Whether you would call an Occitanian overseer of the work of serfs a reeve
is a rather a matter of language.
I just wanted to make sure to not end up in the same trap twice. ;-) (Last
time 'reeve' came up on this list, the poster meant an elected common law
village reeve - also in a context where that made little sense.)
//what are the Glossatores exactly?//
The exponents of the law school of Bologna in the 12th and 13th century,
called so because they glossed the Pandects of Emperor Iustinian.
The school's founder is Irnerius, the other Glossatores are the four
doctores Bulgarus, Martinus, Jacobus and Hugo, plus Placentinus, Azo and
finally Franciscus Accursius, the author of the Glossa Ordinaria, which
became the later standard, likely because of its accessibility.
Kind regards,
Berengar
