Kate

History

Kate is in her late fifties, and is the effective leader of the Sisterhood. She doesn't remember Hild, or the days immediately after her fall, and doesn't quite realise how much they have lost. She was born in Yorkshire, and trained by Aedgifu from the age of ten. She remembers this with gratitude since, as the youngest daughter, she was not treated well at home. Aedgifu taught her about the heritage of the Sisterhood, and of the necessity for preserving the knowledge and the power so that the light should not go out in the land.

There was not much left to preserve, as Kate was the only youngster being trained, and all the other sisters were older than Aedgifu. One by one they died, and Aedgifu slipped into senility ten years ago. By that time Kate had moved them to the small, remote complex of buildings where they now live, and trained Margaret, as well as finding Maud. Margaret was in her tempestuous phase, and Maud was sweet but little use. For a few years it began to seem that she had failed, since she couldn't see either Margaret or Maud passing the tradition on.

Then she found Isabel. She recognised the girl's potential immediately, and began to train her. Her mother was glad to be rid of her, because she was a reproach to the woman, reminding her of her sin. Now, Kate has found hope again, and will try to contact the covenant in an attempt to build the Sisterhood up even further. She is not precisely sure what the covenant could offer: information and training most likely.

Description and Stats

Kate is starting to show her age. Her hair is shot through with grey, and her skin is lined. She was never beautiful, but looks rather dignified in her old age. She wears simple, undyed clothes and has the tanned skin and rough hands of someone who works outside a lot.

Her skills are mostly related to keeping a farm and household running. However, she also has Legend Lore (Britain) 5 and Area Lore (Northern Pennines) 6. Further, she has magical abilities. She has Premonitions 4, and Intuition 6. Her intuition enables her to make leaps from inadequate data and be right, as well as to give the right advice for the circumstances.

Plans &c

She wants the Sisterhood to survive. She has saved Ł10 in cash, ready to be used for whatever purpose best serves them, and she is carefully training Isabel up in the lore that came with her tradition: she has already initiated her as a sister. Beyond that, she has no plans: she long ago gave up on anything more grand, and is a somewhat miserable figure.
